Esperanza Bicycle Safety Education Center https://www.cabq.gov/parksandrecreation/recreation/bike/esperanza-community-bike-shop

5600 Esperanza NW (off of Central and Yucca)

Albuquerque, NM 87105

Their focus is on bicycle education, with the goal of increasing the safety, self-sufficiency, and comfort of recreational, fitness, and utility riders alike. To meet their goal, Esperanza provides classes and programs of varied types and topics, including bicycle safety, road use and traffic law, mechanics, and riding skills. Esperanza accepts donations of bikes, bike parts, and other bicycle related items from the community. Donated bikes are refurbished and used in our many programs. By donating your old bike to Esperanza, it will get a second lease on life as transportation for someone else in Albuquerque. Esperanza does not sell bikes, but there are several ways that someone needing a bike can earn a bike to fit their transportation needs or get their existing bike back into serviceable condition.

Open Shop

Open Shop is a scheduled time in which the center is open to the general public. Anyone who attends has use of the shop’s work stations, tools and used bicycle parts needed to repair their bike. All of the spare parts that are available to Open Shop patrons are donated from cyclists in the community and all of the mechanical work is performed by the bike’s owner with instruction from the staff at Esperanza.

Build-a-Bike

Build-a-Bike is a youth oriented bicycle maintenance and safety class where children are taught how to build their own bike over the course of two weeks. Through this class, participants ages 10-17 learn the inner workings of their bike as they build it up from a bare frame. The maintenance aspects of the class are interwoven with bicycle safety basics and riding skills. Please contact the shop atesperanza@cabq.gov or (505)224-6668 for details or to register.

Earn-a-Bike

In this adult oriented education program, participants can earn a refurbished bike equipped with a bike helmet. To earn the bike, the participant must attend our City Cycling Class and our Roadside Maintenance Class. There is a class fee of $10 per class. Please contact the shop atesperanza@cabq.gov or (505)224-6668 for details or to register.

Work Study

Esperanza has partnered with several local high schools to provide Work Study opportunities for their students. Work Study students learn bicycle maintenance and shop skills while helping the Esperanza staff refurbish donated bikes for the Earn-a-Bike program. Please contact the shop atesperanza@cabq.gov or (505)224-6668 for details.

FREE BIKES: Inside the same building as Esperanza Bicycle Center there is a non-profit organization called Community Bike Recycling Program where you can get free bikes with helmets. Call the Director George Montoya (505-550-5604) to find out if they have any bikes available in the size that you need and arrange to pick up the bikes on the following Wednesday 9am-12pm.

Donations

Donations of bicycles, bike parts, tools, bike clothes, and other bicycle related products are always welcome. All of the bikes used in our programs are refurbished bikes that have been graciously donated to the shop from the community. If you have a bike that needs a new lease on life, we can find it a new home
